As it’s Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month, we wanted to place a spotlight on this autoimmune disease. Our Chiropractic Assistant Lovey Ray has MS and was recently interviewed on “New Day Northwest.” In the interview, she shared that it took a while for her to be diagnosed after her first symptom. She also said the following: “MS doesn’t discriminate. I’m a single mom of five and I never thought I would end up with MS.”
We want to show Lovey our support and provide more information about MS, which affects more than 2 million people worldwide.
According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society website, “Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, unpredictable disease of the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. It is thought to be an immune-mediated disorder, in which the immune system incorrectly attacks healthy tissue in the CNS.”
What Are Some Symptoms
MS can cause many symptoms, including the following:
- Blurred vision
- Loss of balance
- Pain
- Poor coordination
- Slurred speech
- Tremors
- Numbness
- Extreme fatigue
- Problems with memory and concentration
- Paralysis
- Blindness
These problems may come and go or continue and get worse over time. The majority of people, mainly women, are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, although some as young as 2 and as old as 75 have developed MS.
